Today starts in Cheyenne, WY |
Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes |
Cheyenne, Laramie County, WY I-80 exit 362 |
Quoting Lewis Carol, The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships and sealing-wax, Of cabbages and kings or, more apropos at this point, Of temperatures and icy roads, Of altitude and fatigue |
Winter is slow in letting go of the high altitudes this year Temperatures in Vail, CO is below freezing each night I'm going to make a major route change and skirt Colorado this trip This will bring the number of states involved down to 12 Perhaps good to not tempt fate with an unlucky number |
Todays ride is a long dash across Wyoming with almost nothing to see or do But, at least, no chance of icy roads |
I got up and out a little after 9:00 It was cold, 56 degrees. Does not sound cold, but at 75 MPH... Leather jacket and full finger gloves Gloves make it difficult to manipulate the camera safely so few photos today, sorry Hopefully, this narrative will not be too boring |
Wyoming put on its very best display today with all the fabulous geology, with the mountain ridges to go over, and with the lush, green Spring growth, one could not ask for better scenery |
First stop was
Laramie about 45-50 miles west I stopped to get a breakfast burrito at McD |
In Rawlins I gassed up |
The distance between cities is 50-100 miles so I made use of the rest stops along the way |
There is snow on top of the high mountains to the far south and on the mountain ridges. Nearby, large patches of snow in the shadowed areas Some actually lower than the highway I was riding on Did I mention that it was rather chilly? |
Rock Springs was my intended stopping point. I had lunch and caught a photo for Wyoming State |
At another rest stop I was remarking to myself that the wind was remarkably still for Wyoming Always before, the winds had been very strong The flags were limp. Then less than a minute later the wind whipped up. I must have jinxed it |
Best Western Dunmar Inn has about 40 billboards on the highway coming toward Evanston I stopped in for the night. Not too bad |
In the lounge (bar room) there is a coin-op pool table I spent a dozen quarters. There was only one cue marginally usable and only after I scraped the tip with my pen knife the 7 foot table has a distinct roll the cloth is like sprayed-on felt the cushions are unpredictable the balls are cheapest imaginable But I enjoyed myself |
